Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the M10 Tank Memorial for its impressive condition and the rarity of such a well-preserved M10 monument. It's highlighted as a fantastic photo opportunity and a significant historical marker in the Ardennes, offering great views alongside its commemorative purpose.

"Very cool tank monument in my opinion. Several reasons for that: M10's are rare as monuments, the tank is quite complete, in good shape, it is positioned very well for taking pictures and simply looks tough.

I visited it again today after last seeing it in 2015. Back then it did have a more recent paintjob compared to today, but other than that it still remains one of the best tank monuments in the region to me."

M Muscus

"This M10 Achilles "Northampton" with serial number 7264, belonged to the 61st anti tank regiment royal artillery and came from the battle museum in Aywaille. Its now a memorial on the N833 at La Roche, for the 1st Northampton Yeomanry."

Richard Van santen

"Another great spot to include on any historical tour of the area."

The M10 Tank Killer: A WWII Icon

The M10 Tank Destroyer, often referred to as the 'Achilles' by British forces, was a crucial American-designed vehicle used extensively by Allied armies during World War II. Its primary role was to counter the formidable German tanks like the Tiger and Panther. The M10 featured an open-topped turret, which offered excellent visibility for the crew but also exposed them to artillery and small arms fire. Despite this vulnerability, its powerful 3-inch (76mm) gun was capable of penetrating most German armor at combat ranges.

This specific memorial tank, serial number 7264, is an M10 Achilles that served with the 61st Anti-Tank Regiment of the Royal Artillery. Its presence at La Roche commemorates the actions of the 1st Northampton Yeomanry, a unit that played a significant role in the liberation efforts and battles in the Ardennes region. The tank's condition and completeness make it a compelling artifact, offering a tangible connection to the past and the sacrifices made during the war. Reddit
