What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors praise the immersive Panorama painting and the rewarding views from the Lion's Mound. The museum's 4D film and historical displays are also highlights. However, many find the 24 euro ticket price to be significantly overpriced for the overall experience, with some temporary exhibitions incurring extra costs.
"The Battle of Waterloo museum and panorama offer a decent historical experience. The museum has immersive exhibits, uniforms, weapons, a large battlefield model with miniatures, and a short film. The panorama is a fine circular painting with added sound effects. You can also climb the Lion’s Mound for a view of the battlefield and visit Hougoumont Farm with its own multimedia show.
That said, the 24 euro ticket is clearly overpriced. Even with all these features, it does not justify the cost. To make it worse, they had a LEGO exhibition inside which was not even included in the ticket. Charging extra on top of an already high price feels wrong. At most, the ticket should be around 12 euros. Worth seeing once, but definitely not at full price."

"This is from a 1912 , it doesn’t fell like, this was smartly done to immerse you into the painting with giving a 360 view of the representation of the Waterloo’s battlefield. Very well preserved. Worth the money."

The Immersive Panorama Experience
Unlike static museum displays, the panorama's design aims to transport you back in time. The perspective, combined with the detailed depiction of soldiers, horses, and the landscape, provides a unique historical perspective. It's a testament to early immersive art techniques and remains a fascinating highlight for many visitors, offering a different kind of engagement than traditional exhibits.
While some reviews note that the panorama hasn't been updated in decades, its historical significance and artistic merit still make it a compelling attraction. It serves as a powerful visual anchor for understanding the scale and drama of Napoleon's final defeat.
Climbing the Lion's Mound
Visitors are advised to take their time and be patient, especially if others are also making the ascent. The reward for the climb is a spectacular panoramic view of the entire Waterloo battlefield and the surrounding Belgian countryside. It offers a unique vantage point to appreciate the vastness of the area where the historic battle took place.
From the top, you can often spot kestrels hovering below, adding a touch of nature to the historical landscape. It's a moment to reflect on the peace that now presides over a site once defined by intense conflict. Remember to wear comfortable shoes for the climb! :athletic_shoe:
The Waterloo 1815 Memorial Museum
A significant draw for many is the fantastic 4D film, which uses advanced technology to immerse viewers in the events of the battle, providing a more visceral and engaging experience than the traditional panorama. This modern addition complements the historical displays, appealing to both newcomers and those already familiar with the battle.
While the museum is praised for its informative content and engaging features, some visitors have noted the inclusion of temporary exhibitions, such as a LEGO display, which may incur additional costs on top of the already debated ticket price.
