Ethnological museum is one of the most visited sites of Chattogram city. This museum is basically established to give a conception of the succession of various cultural groups of the country and their lifestyles. It is one of the two ethnological museums in the continent of Asia and the other is in Japan. It also comes to help in research work.

The museum was established on 1.25 acres of land adjacent to Badamtali of Agrabad Commercial area of Chattogram city in 1965. Since its inception, it is opened for visitors.

History:

The Department of Archeology, Bangladesh took the initiative for the establishment of the museum in 1965. The museum was opened in 1974 for public inspection. Later, between 1985 and 1995, two rooms were included in the museum. Yusuf Ali, the first education minister of the Government of Bangladesh inaugurated this museum on January 9, 1974.

Description:

The museum authorities have collected some rare materials used in the daily life of various cultural groups. Most of the materials are at risk of extinction. This museum has made comparative analysis of 25 small ethnic groups of Bangladesh with the ethnic groups of 5 foreign countries, in terms of various materials used by them. Chakma, Marma, Tripura, Mrung, Bawm, Khyang, Khumi, Chak, Rakhine, Pankhoa in the Chittagong Hill Tracts; Khasia, Manipuri, Pangan, Patra in Sylhet region; Garo, Hajong, Dalu, Mandai, Cooch in Mymensingh region; Santal, Oraon, Rajbangshi, Polia in Rajshahi-Dinajpur region; and Buno, Bagdi in the Jashore-Jhenaidah region are included in the small ethnic groups of Bangladesh. It has 4 galleries and 1 hall. The 3 galleries of the museum have arrangements for displaying various materials of 25 cultural groups of Bangladesh such as weapons, flower vases, clothes, boats, scissors, ornaments, bamboo pipes. The other gallery is used to show the life style of some communities in India, Pakistan, Kyrgyzstan, Australia and Germany. Visitors get the chance to be acquainted with various festivals and culture of tribal people through maps and graffiti in the hall room. A part of the Berlin Wall of Germany, broken in 1989, is also displayed here. There is a garden in front of the museum.
