Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about Vienna's historic center, particularly Graben, for its imperial charm, stunning architecture, and vibrant atmosphere. The blend of historical sites, elegant shops, and lively cafes creates a captivating experience. While some find it can be crowded, the overall consensus is that it's a must-visit destination for its beauty and cultural richness.

"We had a very good guide which I highly recommend having. Full of insights and background. The gardens were well worth the time to see"

Stephen Grabek

"Vienna’s downtown, or Innere Stadt, offers a unique blend of imperial charm and vibrant city life, making it a top destination for tourists from around the world. The atmosphere is a mix of elegance and energy, where historic buildings, cozy cafés, and luxury shops line the cobbled streets. At the heart of it all stands St. Stephen’s Cathedral, an architectural masterpiece and a popular meeting point for visitors exploring the city.

Tourists are drawn to the district’s many cultural attractions, including the Hofburg Palace, the Vienna State Opera, and several world-class museums. Horse-drawn carriages clip-clop through the streets, adding to the timeless feel of the area. Yet despite its rich history, downtown Vienna also embraces the modern, with contemporary art galleries, designer boutiques, and bustling outdoor markets.

Sidewalk cafés and traditional Viennese coffee houses invite travelers to slow down, enjoy a slice of Sachertorte, and watch the world go by. Street performers add a lively soundtrack to the scene, while guided tours offer insights into the city’s fascinating past. Whether day or night, Vienna’s downtown buzzes with life, offering a welcoming and stylish experience that combines the best of culture, history, and everyday urban charm."

"At the current address of Graben 14, a house owned by Dietrich the Urbetsch was documented as early as the time of Duke Albrecht II the Lame (1339-1358). In the 16th century, a beautiful three-story Renaissance building was erected on the site of the low-rise predecessor, which was considered one of the most interesting and beautiful of its time. This house was frequently depicted as the "Arcade House on the Graben." The beautiful spiral staircase, reaching up to the third floor, along with the round-arched arcades in the courtyard, particularly captivated every visitor. In the 18th century, the first Schanigarten (at that time a "lemonade tent with refreshing water") was opened here in the Cafe Taroni by Johann Jakob Tarone. For an incredible 380,000 guilders, the current building, the "Graben-Hof", was built between 1873 and 1876 according to plans by Otto Thienemann and with the involvement of the famous Otto Wagner, after the demolition of the previous buildings."
