What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Wiener Linien offers an extensive and generally efficient public transport network, praised for its reach and convenience in navigating Vienna. However, some travelers report negative experiences with staff rudeness and unhelpfulness, particularly for non-German speakers, and occasional issues with the ticketing app.
"Very bad service! Very unpolied personnel. Not willing to help and not supportive. I would use app but it was not working and I tried to ask, but the guy was acting not politely and told us that he does not care why the app was not working. Do not use this service if you can at this point."
Ivailo Stoyanov
"Today, I visited Wiener Linien at Praterstern, at the 3rd counter. There was a young man with short hair. I explained my issue in English, telling him that my Vienna travel pass is expiring on January 31, 2025, and that my registration has changed. He told me to come back on Friday. However, I am aware that a letter with the new card should be sent out a month before the pass expires. It will be inconvenient for me to come on January 31, and I don’t want to travel without a valid ticket because I’m an honest person. Unfortunately, this employee refused to answer my questions and behaved rudely and disrespectfully towards me. I believe that such behavior is unacceptable and inappropriate for someone working with customers."

"Absolute disgusting behaviour from the guy with the long hair!! I went there to cancel yearly ticket and he just refused! Saying people buy tickets and then want to cancel it. It says clearly on the website you can cancel it anytime, what’s the problem."

Understanding Wiener Linien Tickets
Purchasing tickets can be done through the WienMobil app, which is highly recommended for its convenience in planning routes and buying tickets on the go. Tickets are also available at ticket machines in stations and at customer service points. Some users have reported issues with the app's functionality, so it's advisable to have a backup plan or ensure your ticket is secured before boarding. Always keep your ticket accessible during your journey, as inspectors can appear at any time.
When considering ticket options, think about your itinerary. If you plan on visiting multiple attractions spread across the city, a day pass or multi-day pass will likely be more economical than buying individual tickets. For instance, a 24-hour ticket is a popular choice for day-trippers. Remember that the pricing for these passes can change, so always verify the current rates on the official Wiener Linien website or the WienMobil app.
Vienna's Public Transport Network
Trams are a quintessential part of the Viennese experience, offering a more scenic way to travel and often passing through historic districts. They are ideal for shorter to medium distances and provide excellent views of the city's architecture. Buses complement the U-Bahn and tram lines, extending the network to areas not directly served by rail and offering convenient connections, especially for reaching specific neighborhoods or outer districts.
Beyond the standard services, Wiener Linien also experiments with innovative solutions like the 'Hüpfer' service, an on-demand electric shuttle operating in select districts, accessible via the WienMobil app. This demonstrates their commitment to sustainable and flexible urban transport. For visitors, understanding this interconnected network is key to efficiently exploring Vienna's many sights.
Customer Service and Experiences
Issues with the WienMobil app have also been mentioned, with some users experiencing technical difficulties and receiving unsupportive responses when seeking assistance from staff. This inconsistency in customer service can be a point of frustration for visitors. It's advisable for travelers to be prepared with their ticket and to approach staff politely, understanding that while many are helpful, negative experiences can occur.
Despite these challenges, the overall functionality and reach of the Wiener Linien network remain a strong point for navigating Vienna. The advice from the community is to be proactive in understanding the ticketing system and to have your ticket ready, minimizing potential friction points during your journey.
