Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise Wolfsklamm Gorge for its stunning natural beauty, particularly the unique wooden walkways alongside the rushing water and waterfalls. The hike to the historic St. Georgenberg Monastery at the top, complete with its cafe offering delicious treats and views, is a major highlight. While the initial part of the gorge can be less impressive, the overall experience is widely considered worth the admission fee and the moderate to challenging hike.

"The most beautiful gorge I went to on holiday in this area of Austria. Definitely worth its price of €6! You have to get through the "ugly" phase in the beginning with trees blocking the view, but after that it gets more beautiful with each step. The walk back is mostly downhill but a bit boring (45-60 minutes). In the village there are some shortcuts to get back to the parking lot quicker."

"Wow, this is an incredible trail! The hike cuts through a gorge carved out by a river with wooden walkways built along the walls. The trail then goes up to a beautiful old monastery that has a cafe. The apple strudel with ice cream and raspberry soda was a delightful treat with an amazing view. Just take the S4 train about 30 min to Stans b. Schwaz Bahnhst. It's then about a 2-3 hour roundtrip hike. The gorge trail does have a fee of 6€ and only about half the hike is through the gorge. But the whole hike is scenic and I thought was totally worth it. To be honest, the pictures of the gorge really can't do it justice and must simply be experienced.

It is a moderate to difficult hike. I saw some families with babies and toddlers struggling a bit. Not sure it's that kind of hike. Also it can be a little confusing to follow the trail once you get out of the gorge. There are basically two options: either the lower route back to Stans village or the upper route to the monastery and then to Stans through another trail. The girl at the ticket booth recommended the upper route. There are some signs to follow but the monastery route is right and up a gravel service road. There are also some church stations of the cross along the road up to the two old chapels. There's also a cool old covered wooden bridge spanning a canyon to get get to the monastery.

Getting back to Stans is also a little confusing but just follow the signs for Maria Tax and Stans. At first it follows the gravel road but then the Maria Tax trail cuts down off the road becoming a hiking trail through the forest again. At one point it crosses another gravel road down past another chapel.

Overall a fun and beautiful half-day hiking trip from Innsbruck!"

"Takes 45-60 minutes to reach the top, medium difficulty, uphill is one-way alongside a gorgeous creek, many waterfalls, white crystal clear water, well kept and managed, there are comfortable toilets right after the entrance gate. Access fee is 6 euro per adult, seems too much but worth it. Twe went up to Benediktinerkloster St. Georgenberg and had a good meal then came down on an akternate road which took 90 minutes, it is a dirt road but quite steep at place and demanding on the legs."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Journey Through the Gorge

Wolfsklamm Gorge offers a unique hiking experience where the path is carved directly into the canyon's side. Wooden walkways and bridges are ingeniously constructed to allow visitors to traverse the narrow gorge, often just feet above the rushing, crystal-clear water. This creates an immersive feeling, with the sounds of the water and the spray of mist accompanying you throughout the ascent. The gorge itself is a testament to the power of nature, with water carving its way through rock over millennia. Reddit

The initial part of the hike might seem less spectacular, with trees obscuring the view, but persistence is rewarded. As you venture deeper, the dramatic rock formations and the sheer scale of the gorge unfold. The trail is well-maintained, with safety railings and clear paths, making it accessible for most hikers. However, the inclines and numerous stairs mean it's a moderate to challenging trek, requiring a reasonable level of fitness. Reddit

Beyond the gorge, the trail continues upwards towards the historic Benediktinerkloster St. Georgenberg. This transition offers a change of scenery, moving from the enclosed, watery world of the gorge to more open, forested paths. The journey is a blend of natural wonder and historical exploration, culminating in a rewarding destination with amenities and panoramic views. Reddit

Benediktinerkloster St. Georgenberg: A Historic Haven

Perched at the top of the Wolfsklamm Gorge hike is the ancient Benediktinerkloster St. Georgenberg, a monastery with a rich history dating back centuries. This serene location offers a welcome respite after the challenging ascent. Visitors can explore the monastery grounds and enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding Tyrolean landscape. Reddit

The monastery is also home to a popular cafe, which has become a highlight for many visitors. Here, you can indulge in traditional Austrian treats like apple strudel with ice cream and refreshing drinks, all while soaking in the magnificent scenery. It's the perfect spot to relax, refuel, and reflect on the journey through the gorge. The cafe's ambiance, combined with the stunning vistas, makes it a memorable part of the Wolfsklamm experience. Reddit

Getting to the monastery involves a final push uphill, often along a gravel service road or a dedicated hiking trail. Along the way, you might encounter chapels and stations of the cross, adding a spiritual dimension to the hike. The monastery itself, with its historic architecture and tranquil atmosphere, provides a stark yet beautiful contrast to the wild, untamed nature of the gorge below. Reddit

Navigating the Return Journey

The return hike from Wolfsklamm Gorge and St. Georgenberg Monastery presents a few options, each offering a different experience. While the ascent through the gorge is the main attraction, the descent requires some attention to ensure you follow the correct path back to Stans. Reddit

One common route is to follow the gravel service road that leads down from the monastery. This path is generally well-maintained but can be quite steep in places, demanding on the legs. It offers a more direct, albeit less adventurous, way back. Alternatively, there are hiking trails through the forest that cut down towards Stans village, often following signs for 'Maria Tax'. These trails can be more engaging but may require more careful navigation. Reddit

It's important to pay attention to signage, as the trails can sometimes be confusing once you leave the main gorge path. Some visitors recommend the upper route via the monastery for the return, while others prefer a more direct downhill path. Regardless of the chosen route, allow ample time and be prepared for a steady descent. Reddit
