"The ruins of an old castle that was abandoned in the 13th century. There is a trail from the promenade along the river at the foot of the mountain, but the fork in the road is quite hard to find, and the path is covered with fallen trees and bushes. If I hadn't asked for directions at Perchtoldsdorf Castle, I might not have been able to get there.
Inside the castle, the foundation walls and Halsgraben remain. It is surrounded by forest, so there is no view. It is a great place for castle ruins lovers, but not suitable for hiking."

"Scharfeneck Castle Ruins near Baden.
First documented in 960.
Only a few remains of the former castle remain. Hidden in the forest above the Helenental Valley."

👨👩👧 Families with Kids
Key advice: Pack plenty of snacks and water, wear sturdy shoes, and be prepared to help navigate the less-defined paths. The historical aspect of exploring a 'real' ruin can be exciting for kids, but manage expectations about the scale of what remains. It's more about imagining the past than seeing grand structures.
🚶♂️ History Enthusiasts
Focus on: Appreciating the historical context, the strategic location, and the short but significant lifespan of the castle. The site's secluded nature allows for a more contemplative experience, perfect for imagining life within its walls centuries ago.
🌿 Nature Lovers
Enjoy: The tranquility of the forest, the sounds of nature, and the visual appeal of the ruins being reclaimed by the environment. It’s a great spot for a quiet walk and appreciating the natural beauty surrounding historical remnants.
