Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the Rollett Museum for its unique and interactive Scooter Museum, where guests are encouraged to engage directly with exhibits. The historical medical collection and the charming villa setting also receive positive mentions. While generally well-regarded, some visitors might find the museum's scope to be more niche.

"From an early age Anton Rollett was an avid collector. As a germ cell, his collection of medical preparations can be viewed. In 1810 he opened his collection in the Gutenbrunnerstraße 4-6 for the public, regular museum operation took place.

With the construction of a beautiful, large villa in the Berggasse, in whose ground floor he himself lived with his family, the museum got from 1817 on the first floor new, larger premises.

After the death of Anton Rollett, the scientific part of the collection of the Realschule, later the Gymnasium, was handed over to the former Augustinian monastery in the Frauengasse as a "collection of teaching material". In 1867, the widow of the deceased founder of the museum gave the city's collection on condition that it was named after its founder Anton Rollett Museum. His son, Heinrich Rollett, was entrusted with the management of the city archives and expanded the collection substantially.

The main exhibit space was the ornate late baroque ballroom, an ideal place to present the collection accordingly. Hermann Rollett died in 1904 and the redoubt building had to be demolished for the too small parish school.

In 1957 the museum was reopened in a new facility. Reg. Rat Alfred Frühwald tried as a volunteer leader to a sifting and inventory of inventories. Rudolf Maurer appointed full-time director of the Municipal Collections Rollettmuseum / Stadtarchiv. In addition to the reorganization of the collections, he has written countless scientific papers on Baden with the publication series of catalog pages.

With the takeover by Dr. med. Ulrike Scholda In 2015, the Rollettmuseum was integrated into the Department of Museums of the City of Baden. Today, from the premises of the Rollett Museum, the Beethovenhaus Baden, the Imperial House on the main square and the Doll Museum in the Attems-Villa are looked after and synergies promoted."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Legacy of Anton Rollett

The Rollett Museum owes its existence to the passion of Anton Rollett, an avid collector from an early age. His initial collection of medical preparations formed the germ cell of the museum. He first opened his collection to the public in 1810, establishing a precedent for regular museum operations. Later, in 1817, the collection found a new, larger home on the first floor of a grand villa he had built in Berggasse. This move marked a significant step in formalizing the museum's presence.

Following Anton Rollett's death, his scientific collection was transferred to the Realschule and later the Gymnasium, serving as 'teaching material.' However, the legacy was cemented when his widow, in 1867, donated the collection to the city on the condition that it be named the Anton Rollett Museum. His son, Heinrich Rollett, took on the management of the city archives and significantly expanded the collection, further solidifying its importance. The ornate late baroque ballroom in the redoubt building became an ideal space for showcasing these expanded collections until the building's demolition in 1904.

After a period of dormancy, the museum was revitalized in 1957. Volunteer efforts and dedicated directors like Rudolf Maurer worked on reorganizing and cataloging the collections, publishing numerous scientific papers on Baden's history. Since 2015, under Dr. med. Ulrike Scholda, the Rollett Museum has been integrated into the Department of Museums of the City of Baden, overseeing other significant local sites like the Beethovenhaus and the Doll Museum, promoting synergy and shared expertise.

Experiencing the Scooter Museum

A standout feature of the Rollett Museum is its Scooter Museum, which offers a refreshingly different museum experience. Unlike many institutions that enforce a strict 'please don't touch' policy, the Scooter Museum embraces an ethos of visitor engagement, famously adopting the motto 'please take a seat.' This interactive approach allows visitors to truly connect with the exhibits, making it a memorable and enjoyable part of the visit. It's a rare opportunity to linger and immerse yourself in the displays.

This hands-on philosophy is particularly valuable for making history accessible and engaging for a wide audience. Whether you're a scooter enthusiast or simply curious about unique museum formats, the Scooter Museum provides a delightful and unexpected experience. The ability to interact directly with the exhibits transforms a passive viewing into an active exploration, setting it apart from more traditional museum settings. It's this unique characteristic that draws praise and makes the museum a must-visit for those seeking something beyond the ordinary.

Visitors often highlight the Scooter Museum as a highlight of their trip to Baden. The opportunity to sit and engage with the displays is frequently mentioned as a positive aspect, contributing to a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. This interactive element, combined with the historical context of the scooters, creates a well-rounded and satisfying experience for all who visit. It's a testament to innovative museum curation that prioritizes visitor enjoyment and participation. Reddit
