Back visiting Duck Reach in Launceston 🥰 This was literally my ‘backyard’ back when I was an archi-student 🙌🌿🥰 I miss this place so much! 😊 I use to live in one of the heritage cottages built for this hydro station, just above the river, and literally head outside into this beautiful reserve for a walk or run … those were the days! 🌿 #launceston #suspensionbridge #river #nature #naturereserve #ge...

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Duck Reach Power Station for its historical significance as Australia's first hydroelectric plant and its picturesque setting. The suspension bridge and riverside walks are frequently highlighted as enjoyable aspects. Some find the steep stairs from the carpark a challenge, and note the lack of on-site facilities.

"Centre opening hours 8am-5pm (EST) or 8am-8pm (DST). 103 fairly steep stairs down from duck reach carpark to suspension bridge, then across to power station. History info signs throughout + a projector with speakers, playing a short film. Interesting! 💡"

Sam

"One of the interesting historic attractions you can see along the South Esk River near Launceston is the old Duck Reach Power Station, which was the first publicly owned hydro-electric plant in the Southern Hemisphere. Operating between 1895 and 1955, it is situated on the west side of the river and is now repurposed into a small museum exhibiting the Station's history.

You can access the Duck Reach Power Station by way of the Duck Reach and First Basin walking tracks within the Cataract Gorge. Alternatively, you can park your vehicle across the river at Corin Street and walk down into the gorge, over a suspension bridge to visit as well.

We spent around 10 minutes at the old Duck Reach Power Station, reading up on the information panels, learning about its construction and flood damage of 1929. There is a nice viewing platform above the Station and views of the river from the suspension bridge are pretty nice as well."

Brad

"Drove to Duck Reach Carpark and did the short walk over the suspension bridge to the power station. Lovely scenery with info boards along the way and in the station. Unfortunately the walk was too steep for the olds who are in their 80s but there is a viewing platform with information boards up top at the carpark."
