What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The MCA Rooftop Cafe is celebrated for its absolutely stunning, unparalleled views of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge, making it a prime spot for people-watching and enjoying the harbour's ambiance. While the location and atmosphere are consistently praised, some visitors note that the food quality can be inconsistent, with mixed reviews on freshness and temperature, though coffee and wine are generally well-received.
"Great location with amazing views. If you like people watching it’s a great spot also. Very reasonably priced for the location. A glass of wine and a salad only $30. Food is not restaurant quality though. Pre prepared salad from the morning and you add the dressing, which is ok, and it means there is not wait for your meal. Lots of seating indoor and outside on a terrace. No booking required just drop in. Overall really great place to have lunch with the family or a friend to linger the afternoon away."

"I had the cauliflower soup and it was absolutely delicious!!! I put 3 stars for service because coffee came out last which I found was a bit weird!
My soup was delicious but my husband ordered the lamb pie and he said it was cold and it wasn't great!
Overall, I enjoyed it!"

"I sent back my $15 ‘fresh’ chicken sandwich twice as the Wonder White bread was clearly stale. Waiter told me it was fresh but I’m sure this had been pre-made and left out to dry up. Finally I suggested it got toasted which is not ideal for a sandwich with lettuce. It was pleasant sitting watching people but the location was so much better on the previous top floor. 11.5% weekend surcharge also ridiculous ! The wine by the glass was good and reasonably priced."

Whether you're enjoying a morning coffee or an afternoon wine, the ever-changing light on the water and the iconic landmarks create a memorable backdrop. It's a place where you can truly appreciate the grandeur of Sydney's waterfront.

For food, popular choices include fresh sandwiches, salads, and share platters. Several TikTok videos and Reddit posts specifically mention the sandwiches as being quite good, with one user calling them 'the best.' The cauliflower soup has also garnered positive remarks for its deliciousness.
However, it's important to manage expectations regarding the food quality. Some reviews indicate that certain dishes, like a lamb pie, were served cold, and a 'fresh' chicken sandwich was perceived as stale. The cafe also has a weekend surcharge, which some visitors found to be quite high. It's generally recommended for a pleasant coffee or a light meal rather than a full culinary experience.
Navigating Crowds and Timing
Late afternoons can also be a good option, offering beautiful 'golden hour' light for views and often seeing a slight dip in crowd numbers after the main lunch rush. While bookings aren't typically required, arriving during these off-peak times will significantly enhance your enjoyment and reduce wait times.
If you do visit during busier periods, such as weekend afternoons, be prepared for a more lively atmosphere. The cafe's layout with both indoor and outdoor seating helps to distribute patrons, but popular spots with the best views can fill up quickly.
