Never thought I would say this: today I did a talk for City of Port Phillip about street gardening! So strange….and positive!! It was a great keen crowd at Emerald Hill Library today, mostly local but a few people had travelled from other councils…lots of great questions! And I am doing another talk next Thursday at St Kilda Library (pics 2/3)! Pretty full but I think there are a few more space...

Reviews Summary

Visitors praise the South Melbourne Town Hall for its magnificent Victorian architecture and historical significance, noting its detailed facades and prominent clock tower. However, many recent reviews mention that the building is often closed for renovations, leading to disappointment for those hoping to visit the interior. Reddit

"Magnificent building in Bank Street, Sth.Melbourne.
Still closed as of 25th February 2025. Renovations still in progress, no clear idea on the date of completion."

Terry Andrew

"What a magnificent historical building! The triangular pediment on the projecting portico at the front is embellished with the words ‘Town of Emerald Hill’ and the municipality’s coat of arms, indicating that the building was originally called Emerald Hill Town Hall when South Melbourne was known as Emerald Hill. It's a very large building as together with the Town Council, it was originally built to house essential, educational and community services including the Public Library, the Court House, the Post Office, the Police Department and the Fire Brigade, and later a Baby Health Centre and a Commonwealth Bank office. However, today it's occupied by the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) and the main hall has become a concert venue. The building's facades on all sides are very detailed however the wide front (south facing) facade with it's projecting portico is a standout. However, the dominant feature of this Victorian building has to be the central tall multi-stage clock tower with it's large turret clock. Something I didn't know, the Town Hall is available for hire for group activities, private functions, celebrations, business, training or community meetings"
