Visitors rave about the magical experience of spotting koalas in their natural habitat on Raymond Island. The free ferry access and peaceful island atmosphere are highly praised, making it a delightful nature escape for all ages. While koala sightings require patience, the overall charm of the island and the joy of discovery make it a highly recommended destination.

"The Koala Trail is such an amazing experience — whether you’re visiting with kids or on your own. To get there, head to the Paynesville Ferry, which runs every 20 minutes. You can walk onto the ferry for free or bring your bike ($7) or car ($14). We were great to know that they provide this service for free. I highly recommend walking, as it gives you the best chance to spot koalas up close in their natural habitat. We were lucky to see eight koalas! They seems to be photo shy, so do not go closer to take any photos as they hide themselves.
The island is so peaceful, with beautiful homes and a true sense of calm. No shops, but a coffee truck is available. A must-visit nature spot!"

"Great experience for anyone wanting to see Koalas in their natural environment. No need to bring your car, if you don't want to pay the fee on the ferry (the fee is a return trip). You can walk the trail."

"Raymond Island Koala Trail is so beautiful and the Koalas 🐨 are so cute!
At first Mum and I thought it was a scam, locals laughing at tourists walking around their beautiful island looking up, tripping over searching for Koalas that were no where to be seen... then all of a sudden we saw the cutest little face sleeping away high up in a tree and it was magical!
You keep walking and walking, looking up in hopes you see more, and you do! People chat and share sightings ot really is a magical place, tours are available and bikes to hire, we just walked on our own. Definitely worth a visit and definitely worth donating if you can, most shops have a collection tin for the little cuties.
Great play ground for kids too.
Awesome day out.
Leave your car at Paynesville and just wander around looking up!"

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Art of Koala Spotting

Spotting koalas on Raymond Island is an art form that rewards patience and keen observation. These marsupials are masters of camouflage, blending seamlessly with the eucalyptus foliage. The key is to look up, way up, into the canopy of the gum trees. Koalas often rest in the forks of branches, appearing as greyish lumps that can easily be mistaken for a knot in the wood. Don't expect them to be actively moving; they spend a significant portion of their day sleeping. Listen for the rustling of leaves or the soft calls of other birds, which might indicate nearby wildlife. Many visitors find success by following the designated walking trails, as these paths lead through prime koala habitat. Reddit

Community wisdom suggests that locals and fellow visitors are invaluable resources. If you see a small group of people gathered and looking up, it's a good bet they've spotted a koala. Don't hesitate to ask them politely if they've seen any. Sharing sightings is part of the fun and helps everyone have a more rewarding experience. Remember to maintain a respectful distance; getting too close can startle the koalas and cause them to retreat further into the trees or even hide. Reddit

While the 'Koala Walk' is the main draw, the island itself offers a tranquil escape. The peaceful atmosphere, dotted with picturesque homes and abundant birdlife, makes for a delightful stroll even if koala sightings are scarce. The journey to the island via the free Paynesville Ferry is also a pleasant experience, offering lovely water views and a sense of anticipation for the natural wonders that await.
