Just casually 4WD’ing onto a nudist beach... as you do 😅
Samurai Beach is tucked into Tomaree National Park near Port Stephens—great for 4WDing, surfing, swimming... and yep, it's a designated clothing-optional spot. Gorgeous stretch of coastline between One Mile and Big Rocky Island. Not your average Sunday drive.

Reviews Summary

Samurai Beach offers a unique 4WD and beachfront camping experience, praised for its stunning natural beauty and the freedom of driving on sand. However, visitors should be aware that it's a clothing-optional beach with significant 4WD activity, which may not suit everyone seeking a quiet or traditional nudist experience. Access without a 4WD can be challenging.

"It’s nudist beach only in name. If you don't have a 4x4 vehicle, you must walk along a soft sand path. While doing so, you’ll have to dodge speeding vehicles and step aside for them to pass. Upon reaching the beach, you'll find many people camping on the sides with their 4x4s, including families with children. For those seeking a true nudist beach experience, I wouldn't recommend it. The sea is very wavy but beautiful. However, the entire area is bustling with fast-moving vehicles, making it unsuitable for a peaceful swim or beach experience."

"Tide can come up pretty quickly, trying to take a nap when it suddenly flooded all our stuffs. Waves are strong enough for some light surfing.
Nearest carpark for non 4WD is Big Rock car park which was a 1.5km hike, lots of spider webs. No open showers. Most came by 4WD."

Ariel Cheong

"Awesome beach. Don't be put off by the the "4x4 only" comments, it is a relatively easy walk up one mile from the parking there, then over the rocks on a hiking path. DON'T try to slog through from the road entrance by foot, it is not fun."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The 4WD Experience at Samurai Beach

Samurai Beach is renowned as a prime destination for 4WD enthusiasts. The ability to drive directly onto the sand is a major drawcard, offering a unique beach experience. Many visitors arrive in 4x4 vehicles, setting up camp right on the beach. TikTokInstagram It's important to note that while the beach is accessible by 4WD, getting stuck in the soft sand is a real possibility if you're not experienced or properly equipped. Reddit

For those without a 4WD, accessing the beach requires a significant walk. Reviews suggest a 1.5km hike from the Big Rock car park, often through soft sand and shared with speeding vehicles. Reddit Some recommend an alternative route via a rocky hiking path from One Mile Beach to avoid the more challenging direct walk. Reddit This highlights the importance of planning your access based on your vehicle and comfort level with walking.

The presence of numerous 4WD vehicles and the associated activity can create a lively, sometimes bustling atmosphere. While this is part of the appeal for many, it's worth considering if you're seeking a completely tranquil experience. Reddit

Camping at Samurai Beach Campground

The Samurai Beach Campground offers a unique opportunity for beachfront camping, with tents and setups often just steps from the ocean. Instagram+1 It's described as a NSW National Park campground where you primarily pay a small booking fee, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious travelers. Instagram The location, nestled amongst large sand dunes, provides stunning views of sunrises and sunsets, adding to the appeal. Instagram

However, it's crucial to be aware of the facilities (or lack thereof). Reviews indicate that there is no water or power available at the campground, and no open showers. Reddit+1 This means campers need to be fully self-sufficient, bringing all necessary supplies, including water, and being prepared to manage waste responsibly by taking all rubbish with them when they leave. Reddit

The campground's proximity to the beach means campers should also be mindful of the tide, which can rise quickly and potentially flood belongings if not secured properly. Reddit Despite these basic facilities, the experience of waking up to the sound of the waves and having direct beach access is a significant draw for many visitors. Instagram

Understanding the 'Clothing-Optional' Aspect

Samurai Beach is officially designated as a clothing-optional area. This means visitors have the choice to be nude or wear swimwear. TikTok However, the reality on the ground, as described in reviews, is that it's not exclusively a nudist beach. Reddit Many visitors, including families with children, frequent the beach and campground, often wearing swimwear. Reddit

Some visitors have reported experiences that suggest the 'nudist' aspect is less prominent than the '4WD rally' atmosphere. Reddit One review mentioned feeling uncomfortable due to the presence of a nudist individual who seemed to follow them, highlighting that while it's clothing-optional, individual experiences can vary and may not always align with expectations of a traditional nudist beach. Reddit

It's advisable for visitors to be aware of this dual nature of the beach. If you are seeking a strictly nudist environment, you might find it mixed with other beachgoers. Conversely, if you are comfortable with the possibility of encountering nude individuals while enjoying the 4WD or camping aspects, then Samurai Beach can still be a rewarding destination.
