The History of the Fernleigh Track

The Fernleigh Track is built upon the former Stockton-Murrurrugan railway line, which was a vital coal haulage route for many years. This history is still visible today through remnants of the old infrastructure, offering a unique blend of natural beauty and industrial heritage. The transformation from a functional railway to a recreational pathway highlights a commitment to repurposing historical assets for community benefit. Instagram

This rail corridor was originally established to transport coal from the mines to the port. Over time, as the need for rail transport diminished, the line was decommissioned. Recognizing its potential for public use, local councils worked to convert it into the popular shared pathway it is today. This conversion has preserved a piece of local history while providing a valuable recreational space. Instagram

The Fernleigh Tunnel is a significant historical feature, recently undergoing renewal to ensure its safety and longevity. It offers a unique, shaded passage that adds an element of adventure to the track. Exploring these historical elements provides a deeper appreciation for the area's past and the evolution of its landscape. Instagram
