Alongside Australia's iconic koalas, platypuses and kangaroos, the wide-ranging grounds hold many animals typically seen in zoos.
The terrain is hilly and requires walking over large distances, so comfortable footwear and clothing are essential. However, it's well-adapted for wheelchairs and strollers, with many families using buggies present.
Having heard it gets very crowded, we timed our arrival just before opening, taking the 9:20 ferry. Upon disembarking, two buses were waiting at the nearby bus stop to take us to the main gate. We arrived before opening but found some people had already entered. Around 10:00 it wasn't too busy yet, but it started getting crowded just before noon.
The grounds are vast with plenty to see, so you won't get bored in a day. Feeding sessions and talk shows are held for various animals, so use the schedule on the provided map to pick events you want to see and plan efficiently. As mentioned earlier, the bird shows at midday and evening are highly recommended, and the Seals show was also enjoyable.
Time feels short, so bringing your own food and eating at a spot with a good view is advisable. If you get lost, ask one of the helpful volunteer guides stationed throughout the park.
As it's an outdoor park, visiting on a fine day is best."

"This is an amazing zoo that has species native to Australia and from around the world. For me this was a first seeing Tasmanian devil, platypus, padmelon, quoll, bilby, dingos, quokka, Fiordland penguins, Aus and New Zealand seals and sea lions. Enclosures and walking trails are great, great views back to the harbour, great animal welfare, great shop and cafe. The ferry over is great and all part of the experience. Also enjoyed seeing all the native bin chickens (ibis), brush turkeys, kookaburra, and water dragons. Thank you for a great day."

"I visited Taronga Zoo today with my big family, and it was my second time there. This is definitely one of the must-do experiences in Sydney. The vibes were amazing!
We went around midday, which isn’t really the ideal time to visit. If you want to see the animals more active and relaxed, it’s better to go either in the morning or later in the afternoon. That way, you’ll have a better chance of spotting most of them — including the lions. We did manage to see the lion, but only for a short while.
The seal show was absolutely amazing — you can’t afford to miss it! The energy, tricks, and connection between the trainers and seals were so fun to watch.
My kids absolutely loved it — from the animals to the shows, they were excited the whole time. It’s such a great place for families to spend the day together.
It was so much fun overall — from boarding the ferry to the very last moment. I missed taking the cable car on the way back, which I really recommend because it offers stunning views of Sydney Harbour and the Opera House.
Such a great experience — can’t wait to go again!"
