~ Lake Argyle WA ~ We couldn’t come all this way and not stop in and we are so glad we did. We visited this gorgeous area that many said reminded them of New Zealand. We swam in the infinity pool with a day pass, took a drive down into the spillway which was mind blowing to watch the amount of water being pushed from the lake. We stopped for a fish by the bridge on the way back to Kununurra...

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Engineering Marvel: Lake Argyle Dam

Lake Argyle is not just a natural wonder; it's a testament to human ingenuity. Constructed on the Ord River, the Lake Argyle Dam was completed in 1971. It's a massive earth-fill dam, holding back an astonishing volume of water. When full, the lake is one of the largest freshwater man-made lakes in the world, dwarfing Sydney Harbour multiple times over. The sheer scale is best appreciated from the dam wall itself, where you can feel the immense power contained within. Instagram+1

Recent rainfall can dramatically increase the lake's volume and discharge rate. At 120% full, the dam can release hundreds of thousands of liters per second, a staggering amount that highlights its capacity and the dynamic nature of the Ord River system. This engineering feat not only created a vast reservoir but also transformed the landscape and economy of the East Kimberley region. Instagram

Visitors often express awe at the size of the dam and the lake it created. It's a stark reminder of the scale of development possible in remote Australia and a crucial part of the Ord River Irrigation Scheme, supporting agriculture in the surrounding areas. Instagram

Wildlife Encounters at Lake Argyle

Lake Argyle is a thriving ecosystem, home to an incredible diversity of wildlife. The lake's freshwater environment supports a significant population of freshwater crocodiles, estimated to be in the tens of thousands. While they are generally shy and not as aggressive as their saltwater cousins, it's crucial to maintain a safe distance and never feed them. Boat tours offer the best and safest opportunities to observe these ancient reptiles in their natural habitat. Instagram

Beyond crocodiles, Lake Argyle is a paradise for birdwatchers. With over 240 species recorded in the area, you're likely to see a variety of waterbirds, raptors, and migratory species. Keep an eye out for majestic sea eagles, colourful parrots, and numerous waterfowl. The expansive waters and surrounding vegetation provide ample feeding and nesting grounds. Instagram

For a truly immersive experience, consider renting a tinnie. This allows you to explore quieter coves and observe wildlife at your own pace. Many visitors report thrilling encounters with crocodiles and a plethora of birdlife, making wildlife spotting a highlight of any trip to Lake Argyle. Instagram+1

The Iconic Infinity Pool Experience

One of the most talked-about features of Lake Argyle is the infinity pool at the Lake Argyle Resort. This isn't just any pool; it's an experience. Perched with a commanding view over the vast expanse of the lake, swimming here feels like you're floating on the horizon. It's a surreal and incredibly photogenic spot, often drawing comparisons to the most luxurious resorts worldwide. Instagram

Many visitors purchase a day pass to enjoy the pool, even if they aren't staying at the resort. It's the perfect place to cool off from the Kimberley heat, relax, and soak in the breathtaking scenery. The feeling of swimming in the pool with the seemingly endless lake stretching out before you is a memory many travelers cherish. Instagram

For photographers, the infinity pool offers unparalleled opportunities. The contrast between the clear blue water of the pool and the ochre tones of the surrounding landscape, all under the vast Australian sky, creates stunning visual compositions. It's a quintessential Lake Argyle photo opportunity that shouldn't be missed. Instagram
