A grand tour of Mount Feathertop! There are a lot of different ways to visit Mt Feathertop - Victoria’s second tallest mountain (1922m) - today’s circuit takes in 3 of the most popular. That’s pretty good bang for your buck. However, the circuit is just over 35km with 1850m of elevation gain! Although, it didn’t feel all that difficult. All of the trails that make up this circuit are in great co...

Ticked Victoria’s second highest mountain, Mount Feathertop, off the list. I have to say this is one of the most beautiful track I have done to so far. This was 26km hike with an elevation over 800m via razorback track. Thanks to @alltrails i can record this and many other tracks. #mountfeathertop #mountains #australia #hiking #hikingaustralia #highcountryvictoria #alpine #travel #hiker #travelpho...

Reviews Summary

Mount Feathertop is lauded for its breathtaking alpine scenery and challenging, rewarding hikes, particularly the Razorback Track. Visitors praise the panoramic views and the sense of accomplishment. However, some find the summit area crowded and note the presence of insects, while access to certain trailheads can be difficult without a 4WD.

"Amazing spot for a multi day hike, we spent 2 nights on the razorback track but opted out of camping at the federation hut. We stayed at a nice flat spot between the two knobs and it was the best decision ever, as we were there during easter weekend and the campsite would have filled up very quick."

"Federation hut was packed so I decided to camp on Little Feathertop. MUMC hut is worth the visit. Enjoyed solitude and peace. Thank you for an amazing experience 🏕️"

Ryyu.

"We drove up to the end of the Stony Top track and hiked from there to the summit of Mount Feathertop which is about 9 km return and took us about 3.5 hours return. The end of the Stony Top track is closed during winter (opens early November).
You need a 4WD or a AWD with decent clearance to drive the track, specially the last 2km of the track.

Easy enough hike, it does get quite steep at the end but absolutely stunning and beautiful on a nice day. Recommended to take some insect repellant for the millions of black ants that try to climb your feet/legs everytime you stop and there are lots of small flies right at the summit, don't let this stop you."

Navigating the Razorback Track

The Razorback Track is arguably the most iconic route to Mount Feathertop, offering a spectacular ridgeline walk. This 22km return journey from Diamantina Hut is known for its constantly changing alpine scenery and panoramic views. It's a challenging hike, often taking 7-9 hours for a day trip, but the reward is immense. The track is well-defined but exposed, so be prepared for wind and rapidly changing weather. Many hikers opt for an overnight hike to fully appreciate the beauty and break up the exertion. Instagram+1

For overnight stays, camping near Federation Hut is popular, but it can become crowded, especially during peak times like Easter weekend. Some visitors choose to camp on Little Feathertop for a more secluded experience. The final ascent to the summit can be steep and requires careful footing. Remember to pack essentials for alpine conditions, including layers, rain gear, and sufficient water. InstagramReddit

Key Takeaways for the Razorback Track:
* Distance: ~22km return
* Time: 7-9 hours (day hike), 2 days (overnight)
* Difficulty: Challenging
* Highlights: Ridgeline views, alpine landscapes, summit panorama.
* Camping: Near Federation Hut or Little Feathertop.

The Bungalow Spur Ascent

The Bungalow Spur Track offers a more traditional, forested ascent to Mount Feathertop, starting from Harrietville. This route is generally steeper and more sustained than the Razorback, providing a different kind of challenge and a chance to experience the alpine environment from a different angle. It's a great option for those seeking a more immersive forest hike before reaching the alpine plains. Instagram

While less exposed than the Razorback, the Bungalow Spur still demands good fitness and preparation. Hikers on this track should be aware of potential wildlife, including snakes, particularly on warmer days. The trail eventually merges with other routes, leading you towards the summit. This track is often chosen by those looking for a longer, more strenuous climb or as part of a multi-day loop. Reddit

Consider Bungalow Spur if:
* You prefer a forested ascent.

* You want to experience a different aspect of the alpine terrain.

Camping and Hut Etiquette

Mount Feathertop offers a unique opportunity for alpine camping. Popular spots include the area around Federation Hut, which provides basic shelter and a communal atmosphere.
