What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Reviews for the Esplanade Hotel are mixed, with significant praise for its prime locations and family-friendly facilities, especially in Newquay and Klang. However, the Fremantle location faces criticism for dated rooms, high prices, and inconsistent hospitality, leading some guests to feel it's not worth the cost.
"Horrible- We paid $477 (not including breakfast)for 1 night in a very average room. What a ripoff. Our room buzzed all night due to being next to a service shaft. Didn’t even have a coffee pod machine or a separate shower. Cheapskate & corner cutting at every glance. From the glassware to the furniture. Horrible & dirty dated public spaces, dirty tiny pool with a multi story carpark looming over it. This could be a lovely hotel with money spent on it. It’s really not worth the price. I wouldn’t spend more than $200 per night at its highest. Don’t trust the images- they make it look far better than what it is. Great location, all it has going for it. Very disappointing, we checked out after 1 night as it was so bad. We feel robbed ."

"Booked two rooms and had a one night stay here with friends.
We attended a function at Fremantle Sailing Club, returned to the hotel just before 11.30 intending to have a nightcap before returning to our rooms to retire for the night. Nope! The bar was closed and no-one in sight except for two tables, one of 5 and the other of 6 people who said they would have liked more beers but the bar was closed.
Very disappointing indeed. Whilst we were chatting to 3 girls celebrating a 21st birthday we were approached by a staff member who told us to keep the noise down. As we were leaving to go back to our rooms a couple of ladies were going to play the piano and were told by another staff member to leave the piano alone.
It's a Saturday night. People are out and about celebrating whatever occasion brings them to Fremantle and a night away from home at the Esplanade. A night in a backpacker's hostel probably would have been more fun and a hell of a lot cheaper.
We won't bother coming back to this particular establishment in Freo, we'll go somewhere else where we're made to feel welcome and can have a late nightcap.
No complaints about the comfort of our room, just the "hospitality" (or lack thereof) provided.
PS...........we are all well into our 70's - not a bunch of yahoos looking to create havoc!."

"Best location, walking to everywhere. Room was old especially the lights switches were not working. The main switch was near the door not near the bed. The charging slots were also far.
It was safe and good stay as a solo female traveler. Peaceful at night."

The Esplanade Hotel Experience: A Tale of Two Locations
In contrast, the Esplanade Hotel Fremantle leans into its Victorian heritage, offering a stay steeped in history. While praised for its excellent location within walking distance of Fremantle's attractions, some guests find the rooms and public spaces to be dated and in need of refurbishment. There have been reports of issues like buzzing noises, lack of modern amenities, and concerns about cleanliness in some areas. The 'hospitality' aspect has also been questioned, with some visitors feeling unwelcome, particularly if seeking a late-night drink.
Meanwhile, the KSL Esplanade Hotel in Klang, Malaysia, offers a different proposition, focusing on modern amenities like an onsen spa and a family-friendly kids' pool. It's noted for its value, with one reviewer finding it 'berbaloi' (worthwhile) for the price, especially for families looking for activities. The hotel also features a sky dining restaurant, SORA, providing a unique culinary experience with city views. This highlights how the 'Esplanade Hotel' name can refer to vastly different types of establishments, from a classic seaside resort to a historic city hotel and a modern Malaysian getaway.
Navigating Family Stays: What Parents Need to Know
The KSL Esplanade Hotel in Klang also positions itself as a family-friendly option, with specific mention of a 'Family Room' featuring bunk beds and an activity space, alongside a kids' pool that's a major highlight. Reviews suggest that even at a more budget-friendly price point, there are plenty of activities to keep children entertained from morning till night.
However, it's worth noting that the 'family-friendly' label might be more about activities than overall atmosphere for all guests. One Reddit review from a group of seniors at the Fremantle Esplanade Hotel mentioned being told to keep the noise down on a Saturday night, suggesting that while kids' activities are present, a lively adult atmosphere might not always be accommodated. Therefore, parents should consider the specific location and their own expectations for the overall hotel vibe when booking.
Value for Money: Balancing Price and Experience
Conversely, the KSL Esplanade Hotel in Klang is highlighted for its affordability and the amount of activities offered for the price. One reviewer found it 'berbaloi' (worthwhile) to book a room for RM190, emphasizing the variety of activities available for children. This suggests that for families seeking entertainment and a functional stay without expecting luxury, this location offers good value.
For the Esplanade Hotel in Newquay, while not explicitly detailing prices, the focus on extensive family facilities and prime beach location implies a potentially higher price point. Reviews tend to focus on the experience and amenities rather than cost-effectiveness, suggesting it's positioned as a destination hotel where the price reflects the prime location and family offerings.
