"Breakout Creek is located at the end of the River Torrens, running through Adelaide’s western suburbs and ending at Henley Beach.
Prior to European colonisation, coastal sand dunes formed a barrier that prevented water from the River Torrens flowing out to the gulf.
During rainy seasons, floodwaters filled a series of linked wetlands from Grange to Glenelg. (This area of wetlands was known as the Reedbeds.)
An artificial channel was built in the 1930s, named Breakout Creek, to provide flood protection for the nearby suburbs.
Growing up in Flinders Park during the 1980s-90s I saw the creation of the hills to coast linear park being constructed for flood mitigation, with widening and naturalisation sections of many sections of the river.
(section 1) a 500m stretch upstream of Henley Beach Road was developed from an artificial channel to a more naturalised one in 1999.
(section 2) the stretch between Henley Beach Road and Tapleys Hill Road was worked on in 2010, which included widening and deepening the channel, removing weeds and planting thousands of native seedlings.
(section 3) This final stage covers a 1.7km length of the channel between Tapleys Hill Road and the outlet, where the river meets the sea at West Beach. This artificial channel has been primarily utilised for horse agistment and redevelopment plans are underway with some minor works and relocation of facilities occurring in 2020 and more landscaping works slated to 2021/22

"The redeveloped Breakout Creek is great. I loved the sound of the many Banjo Frogs. It'll be even better once the many trees begin to grow and the grass fills out to a lush green. However, I did a complete loop and only came across one drinking fountain. That seems a little poor for a $14 million upgrade. To be fair, I walked on the inner rubble tracks, there may have been more drinking fountains out at the bitumen tracks."
