"UPDATE: the issues were FINALLY addressed and the university admitted it had WRONGLY on TWO occasions, accused someone of using AI. The stress and anxiety, never mind constant worry and dismay when this should have been exciting and engaging time of learning, is hard to exaggerate. I hope they've their approach has changed but cannot comment (this saga was over June-August 2025).

The current star rating is based upon the quality of education witnessed in relation to the fees. This may change. There are a number of outstanding issues that will be expended upon subsequently, depending outcomes from current complaints. In the interim, I would strongly advice that you DO NOT enroll unless absolutely necessary. The University's approach to AI and academic integrity is extremely flawed and you may, as a student, be wrongly accused and suffer weeks or months of stress and anxiety and not be able to continue studies. A specific case study in this space is currently being prepared for legal consideration. I cannot stress enough how much I encourage you to avoid and seek out a university that has a more human and professional approach to current AI concerns. "The graduation being in the heat of the day was ridiculous. While your overpaid academics were sitting under shade, acting like they were dying of heatstroke, our poor graduates in their full robes and family were burning up in the sun. If its going to be fully outdoors with no real option of shade at least do it at a more appropriate time of day or give fair warning somewhere that it is clearly written that it is in the full open. Not only was some of our family burnt to a crisp, our graduate got pretty bad sunburns to their hands and was not exactly happy at the discomfort themselves and those around them felt in those gowns.
I myself have a scalp so tender, it hurts just to brush my hair out and my chest and shoulders are burnt to kingdom come, even days later despite intervention to reduce the inflammation. Our graduate's mother is worse than me even.
Do better for the wellbeing of your students in their last experience with you and their guests first experience. I have lodged a formal complaint about this and am looking forward to the response."

Extremely disappointing experience as an online student. On the surface, UNE advertises flexibility and accessibility — but in reality, it feels outdated and out of touch with the needs of modern students.
Lecture content is often lazy and recycled, with minimal updates or engagement. AI use is prohibited for students, yet lecturers openly admit to using it to mark assessments, creating a frustrating double standard.
The “intensive schools” are the most disappointing aspect. While marketed as essential practical learning, at least 80% of the content in my last intensive could have been delivered online. Instead, students are required to leave families behind for over a week, often spending thousands of dollars on accommodation and travel, just to be crammed into overcrowded classes of 30–100 people, where learning becomes chaotic, rushed, and overwhelming.
To make things worse, online students are complete strangers, yet we're forced into group work, often in awkward, hands-on scenarios. The lack of rapport or familiarity makes collaboration uncomfortable — especially when age gaps of 20–30 years exist within groups. Physical interaction under these circumstances feels poorly considered and creates unnecessary discomfort for many students.
It’s hard not to feel like these intensives exist less for educational benefit and more to drive revenue into the Armidale economy — whether formally agreed upon or not. There seems to be little consideration from the university or unit coordinators about the real cost — financially, emotionally, and practically — for remote students.
UNE needs to reevaluate its approach to online education. At present, it feels like online students are seen not as learners, but as a source of income."
