"This is a cute little museum just outside the C.B.D. of Adelaide, pretty easy to get to by public transport. It’s only open on weekends. We came on a quiet Sunday morning and we were virtually the only people. We paid $26 for two seniors' tickets and a short guided tour.
The house belonged to Henry Ayers, by all accounts, an influential and successful politician who was premier of South Australia multiple times between 1863 and 1873, and after whom Ayers Rock was named. The house was built by his father-in-law, later given to Henry I believe or sold to him.
Whilst the structure of the house is obviously original, most of what is inside has been reconstructed and recreated to resemble what the house would have looked like so in that sense it’s not a complete historical experience, but it does give one some idea of what home living was like in that period: Sans heating, cooling or electricity (not too comfortable, I wouldn’t have thought).
The lady who took us on the tour was knowledgeable, friendly and patient, and took the time to explain to us a bit of the history of this state and the man whose home we were touring. But all the staff are friendly and helpful and do their best to make one’s visit an enjoyable and satisfying one.
We spent about an hour here all up and enjoyed the visit, but to be honest there isn’t a huge amount to see, and I wouldn’t put it on my must see list when in Adelaide, unless one has a particular interest in history. (which I do!).
The downstairs toilets were locked during our visit and inaccessible, but there’s also one upstairs, which was accessible. It was clean and well provisioned. There’s no cafe, but then, you’re a few minutes walk from the centre of the C.B.D., where there are multiple eating and drinking options. At the reception are a few items for sale, although there’s no shop per se."
