"We visited the Fray José María Bottaro Regional Historical Museum, located on the block of the Municipal Palace, the site of the Franciscan convent built in 1748, around which the town of San Pedro was founded.
It was established on September 10, 1978, and is named after the Franciscan friar Fray José María Bottaro, born in San Pedro on October 24, 1859, who later became Archbishop of Buenos Aires.
The building itself is a museum piece that once served as the curator: a colonial façade preceded by a courtyard featuring a cistern with a huge entrance door that, through a hallway, leads us into the main hall, around which the thematic rooms are arranged.
The Convent Hall has several rooms. There is a portrait of José María Bottaro, the friar after whom the museum is named, and another of Fray Cayetano José Rodríguez, the most famous Franciscan from San Pedro in history, the first librarian of the National Library, author of a national anthem that he himself rejected in favor of Vicente López y Planes, and whose signature was affixed to the Declaration of National Independence in Tucumán in 1816.
Another room contains antique armchairs that were part of the Golden Hall of the Municipal Palace, where the Deliberative Council meets today.
The next room tells the story of Eduardo Depietri, creator of the port, and finally another room tells the story of the old San Pedro Hospital.
Its offering is not only comprised of permanent exhibitions, which display objects of high heritage value to the city, but is also enriched and complemented by special activities such as painting exhibitions, artistic performances, audiovisual screenings, conferences, literary presentations, congresses, guided tours and visits, excursions, among other initiatives.
