The unique 'Black Pampas' and numerous volcanic cones create unforgettable scenery. "A bit far away from civilization, but the scenes worth the effort. Get a 4 wheel drive car if you want to drive around"

Alex Y

"This place might be nice with good tour company, but this is the warning: If you don't speak Spanish, DON'T go with Choique Travel Alternativo!!! They might offer you some English information papers, but the quality is so bad, that please, save your money or choose another company. Me and my boyfriend were totally misleaded when booking the tour, as it sounded like the papers would have pretty much the same information that the guide is talking, and that it's not the problem we don't speak Spanish.

We spent four hours without any information, then got some papers that did not have information (at all!) of all the places where we stopped, and the rest of the stops were in wrong order. It was just very carelessly copied scientific text that was impossible to understand. The guide did nothing to help. He did not even give the papers before I had asked them twice! Basically we were sitting in a bus for over 12 hours and didn't have a clue what we should be looking at and why.

After two weeks of e-mails, visits to the office, etc, we finally got the answer from the owner: no refund of the money, not even partly. They think we have got what we paid for and that they made us a favor by giving those papers. Clearly they don't care about the quality of the tour they offer.

I have travelled a lot in a low budget. This was a very expensive tour, and this is the first time I have ever had to complain! Unbelievably poor customer service."

"The ultimate destination for nature lovers.
The park is a gem, with breathtaking views and a captivating, natural setting. We drove our jeep to the park entrance, then waited for our guide, Daniel, who, with professionalism and expertise, led us through the park, explaining the volcanic formations from different eras. Everything was extremely interesting and wonderful, both in terms of the views and the nature."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Volcanic Heart of La Payunia

La Payunia Reserve is a geological marvel, characterized by its extensive volcanic activity. The landscape is dominated by the presence of approximately 800 volcanic cones, creating a surreal and otherworldly environment. These formations are a direct result of past eruptions, which have shaped the terrain over millennia. The most striking feature is the 'Black Pampas', a vast expanse of black volcanic ash that stretches across the reserve, giving it a unique, almost lunar appearance. Instagram+1

This volcanic origin has also contributed to the reserve's rich biodiversity. The specific soil composition and microclimates created by the volcanic activity support a unique array of native flora. This ecosystem, in turn, provides a crucial habitat for various mammals, birds, and reptiles. The reserve is particularly renowned for being the winter range of the world's largest guanaco migration, highlighting its ecological importance. Instagram+1

Understanding the volcanic history of La Payunia is key to appreciating its dramatic beauty. The sheer number of cones and the vastness of the ash fields are a powerful reminder of the earth's dynamic forces. For visitors, this translates into an unforgettable visual experience, offering a stark contrast to more conventional landscapes and making it a prime destination for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike. Navigating La Payunia: Tours vs. Self-Drive

Deciding whether to join a guided tour or explore La Payunia Reserve independently is a common consideration for visitors. Guided tours are often the preferred option, especially for those who don't speak Spanish fluently. Tour operators provide expert guides who can offer in-depth explanations of the volcanic geology, local wildlife, and conservation efforts. These tours typically include transportation, often in specialized vehicles, and sometimes meals and snacks, making the logistics much simpler. TikTokReddit

However, for the adventurous and self-sufficient traveler, self-driving is also an option, but it comes with significant caveats. A 4x4 vehicle is essential due to the rough, unpaved roads composed of gravel and volcanic ash. Without adequate clearance and four-wheel drive, navigating the terrain can be challenging and potentially damaging to a standard vehicle. Cell service is also extremely limited within the reserve, meaning you'll be largely on your own if you encounter any issues. Reddit+1

Ultimately, the choice depends on your comfort level, budget, and desire for in-depth information. While self-driving offers freedom, guided tours provide a more accessible, informative, and often safer way to experience the unique wonders of La Payunia Reserve, ensuring you don't miss out on the rich details of this extraordinary landscape. Conservation Efforts in La Payunia

La Payunia Reserve is not just a stunning natural landscape; it's also a vital area for conservation. A significant recent development involved the transfer of 40,000 hectares (100,000 acres) of land to the province of Mendoza, extending permanent protection to critical habitats. This expansion is particularly important for safeguarding the winter range of the world's largest guanaco migration. Instagram

The reserve's unique ecosystem, shaped by volcanic activity, supports a delicate balance of plant and animal life. Conservation efforts focus on protecting this biodiversity, ensuring the survival of species like the mountain viscacha and the plains viscacha, which are integral parts of the Argentinian ecosystem. Wildlife cameras are employed to monitor native species and understand their behavior and needs within the protected area. Instagram

By preserving areas like La Payunia, authorities and conservation groups aim to maintain the ecological integrity of the region, allowing natural processes, such as the guanaco migration, to continue undisturbed. This commitment to conservation ensures that the dramatic volcanic scenery and its inhabitants can be appreciated by future generations. Instagram
