Reviews Summary

Visitors rave about the unparalleled panoramic views from Loma del Pliegue Tumbado, often calling it the most beautiful spot in El Chaltén. While challenging due to its constant ascent, the hike is considered manageable with proper preparation and pacing. Some find the views repetitive until the summit, but the higher viewpoint is consistently praised as a must-see. Wind can be a factor, but many report favorable conditions.

"Nice hike! Not too hard, although the views are pretty much the same the whole trip. Once you finish the track there's a nice view. But if you week walking towards right you migh find a big group of boulders and rocks, and there, there's an even better view to the river and Cerro Torre."

Francisco Fernandez

"Amazing hike! We did it in 7 hours including taking pictures and rest!

We went to both the viewpoints! And the 2nd one and the higher one is definitely worth hiking up for!"

Charlie C

"Out of the three main trails (Torre, fitz roy, tumbado), it is very close to the fitz roy in difficulty. So it's like the second hardest but not by much.
There are two Miradors and the top. The higher one requires 30-60min extra steep hill but gives a 360° view of the area. Definitely worth it.
Lot of people warn about the wind, maybe I got lucky on the weather but it really wasn't that bad. A small windbreaker was enough.
No need for big boots or sticks either.
Watch out for the cows tho, I accidentally got too close to a baby and mama wasn't happy. Tried charging me. Would not recommend."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Challenge and Reward of the Ascent

Loma del Pliegue Tumbado is renowned for its consistent, sustained climb. While the initial 8 kilometers to the first viewpoint are described as relatively accessible with varied terrain like sand, stones, and meadows, the path continues to ascend steadily. Instagram This means that even though it's not technically difficult in terms of scrambling, the sheer elevation gain requires stamina and a good pace. Many hikers recommend taking it slow, breathing deeply, and enjoying the journey rather than rushing to the top. Instagram The reward for this effort is immense, with panoramic views that are considered by some to be the most beautiful in El Chaltén. Reddit

For those seeking an even more spectacular vista, pushing on to the higher summit viewpoint is highly recommended. This additional 30-60 minute climb, though steep, unlocks a breathtaking 360° panorama. Reddit From this vantage point, you can see the iconic Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre mountain ranges, Lago Viedma, and the surrounding glaciers. Instagram+1 It's a truly immersive experience that makes the challenging ascent feel entirely worthwhile. Instagram

It's important to note that while the hike is challenging, it's often described as less crowded than other popular trails in El Chaltén, such as Laguna de los Tres. Reddit This can offer a more serene experience, allowing you to fully appreciate the grandeur of the Patagonian landscape. Instagram

Navigating El Chaltén's Infamous Wind

Patagonia is synonymous with strong winds, and El Chaltén is no exception. Loma del Pliegue Tumbado is particularly susceptible to these conditions, with many travelers emphasizing that it's a hike best avoided if the wind is severe. Instagram The exposed nature of the trail, especially as you gain elevation, means that strong gusts can make the hike uncomfortable and even dangerous. TikTok While some visitors report experiencing manageable wind, often a light windbreaker is sufficient, others strongly advise against attempting the hike if the forecast predicts high winds. InstagramReddit

Checking the weather forecast diligently before you set out is crucial. TikTok This includes not just wind speed but also cloud cover, as fog and clouds can obscure the spectacular views that are the main draw of this hike. Instagram Being prepared with appropriate layers, including windproof and waterproof gear, is essential, even on seemingly clear days. Instagram The unpredictable nature of Patagonian weather means that conditions can change rapidly, so it's always wise to be overprepared rather than underprepared. TikTok

Loma del Pliegue Tumbado is a photographer's dream, offering some of the most comprehensive panoramic views in El Chaltén. Instagram From its summit, you can capture iconic landmarks like the Fitz Roy massif, Cerro Torre, and the expansive Lago Viedma all in a single frame. Instagram+1 The trail itself provides evolving scenery, from forests and meadows to rocky outcrops, offering diverse photographic opportunities along the way. Instagram

TikTokInstagram Early mornings are particularly recommended for capturing the sunrise light hitting the peaks, creating a magical atmosphere. TikTok While the hike is long, the payoff in terms of photographic potential is immense, making it a must-do for landscape photographers visiting the region. Instagram
