Reviews Summary

EcoParque Mendoza is a site of significant transformation, moving from its zoo origins towards a conservation-focused eco-park. While praised for its historical library and adventure activities, its past animal welfare issues, particularly concerning Arturo the polar bear, remain a point of contention and discussion among visitors and online communities. The park's ongoing evolution and educational efforts are key aspects of its current identity.

"This zoo like all others disgust me! When are they going to learn, especially the tourists visiting?! How can you all sleep at night? You had the opportunity to move poor Arturo to a better place but made excuses! Any life left in him no matter how old he was was still better spent elsewhere. I can't believe how many years he had been cooped up in that confinement of his! And the state of him too, dirty and clearly distressed! You can make excuses all you want saying how he was 'looked after' and I noticed in some videos he was being sprayed down with a hose to keep him cool in the torturous heat, did you honestly think that was good enough? Arturo should have been in his natural habitat, what a waste of life! You should all be ashamed, let this hopefully be your lesson! RIP Arturo"

Chelsey Freeman

"This place is an absolute DISGRACE. For years Arturo was kept in those conditions and no one at that miserable zoo did anything about it! Everyday they walked right by this suffering creature and did nothing. The owner/ overseer should go to jail! His condition and subsequent death could have been prevented... but they did NOTHING to save him!! That poor bear obviously looks like he is in agony and utter distress. What a shame. Something must be done. May God have mercy on their souls."

Cathy G

"I like to think every human being deserves the benefit of the doubt, but this is idealistic at best. Those that did this, not only are their actions deplorable, but they are simply lesser, more primitive humans. If you can
live with seeing Arturo, for example, in his condition for 22 years, you must have a more primitive version of the human anatomy. I can't think of any other reason. All in, Zoos must go."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The Transformation: From Zoo to EcoPark

EcoParque Mendoza is a site of significant transformation, evolving from its past as a traditional zoo into a space focused on conservation and education. This shift is a response to growing awareness of animal welfare and the ethical considerations of keeping animals in captivity. The park aims to provide a more naturalistic and enriching environment for its remaining inhabitants and to educate visitors about biodiversity and conservation efforts. Instagram+1

Key to this transition has been the relocation of many animals to specialized sanctuaries and wildlife centers. Notable examples include Lucy, the last Bengal tiger, who was moved to a sanctuary in Minnesota, USA, and Kenya, a tapir, who also embarked on a long journey to a sanctuary. These moves are complex operations, requiring extensive planning and collaboration with international organizations to ensure the animals' well-being. Instagram+2

Visitors can still see remnants of the zoo's past, such as the historical library housed in the former Templo de Vesta, which contains over 15,000 volumes from the zoo's early directors. The park is actively working to repurpose these spaces and create new exhibits that promote understanding and appreciation for wildlife and the environment. Instagram

Understanding Past Animal Welfare Concerns

The history of EcoParque Mendoza is marked by significant public concern regarding animal welfare, particularly highlighted by the case of Arturo, a polar bear. Reviews and discussions on platforms like Reddit express deep disappointment and anger over the conditions in which Arturo was kept, citing his distress and the perceived lack of adequate action from the zoo's management to improve his situation or relocate him to a more suitable environment. Reddit+2

Critics argue that keeping animals from vastly different climates, such as a polar bear from the Arctic in the heat of Argentina, is inherently cruel and unsustainable. The sentiment expressed is that zoos, in general, are 'miserable jails' for animals, and that the focus should be on conservation in natural habitats rather than captivity. The tragic outcome for Arturo has fueled calls for the abolition of zoos and a greater emphasis on ethical treatment of animals. Reddit+1

While the park is undergoing a transformation and has relocated many animals, these past events continue to shape public perception. Visitors are encouraged to be aware of this history and to observe the park's current efforts towards conservation and education with a critical yet open mind. Instagram

For those seeking a dose of adrenaline, EcoParque Mendoza offers exciting adventure activities. The park features zip-lining and arboreal (tree-top) courses, providing a fun and engaging way to experience the natural surroundings. These activities are popular among visitors looking for more than just a passive sightseeing experience. TikTok

These adventure options are designed to be accessible to a range of ages and fitness levels, though specific requirements may apply. It's a great way to add an element of thrill to your visit and see the park from a different perspective. Booking these activities in advance might be advisable, especially during busy periods.
