Reviews Summary

Recoleta Cemetery is a visually stunning and historically significant site, often described as an open-air museum with impressive mausoleums and sculptures. Visitors appreciate the unique architecture and the chance to see the graves of notable figures like Eva Perón. However, some find the entrance fee steep for foreigners, and a few reviews mention rude staff and a lack of maintenance in certain areas.

"A mixed bag, but more negatives than positives…

❌ Extremely overpriced unless you’re an Argentine citizen. There’s no free entry and it’s super expensive.

❌ The staff are some of the rudest least helpful people I’ve ever come across.

✅ It is an interesting place to look around, even though as a European most of the famous people were not famous to me.

❌ The state of some of the graves is disgusting, they are literally being used as rubbish dumps with empty paint cans and plastic bags dumped on top of coffins. I have no idea how they are spending the exorbitant entrance fees but it’s not on respecting the dead who are buried here."

Andy Watts

"This is a must visit spot but I recommend getting a local guide as it is all rather meaningless with proper explanations. The mausoleums are a walk through the history of Argentina and of course you can see its most famous inhabitant - Eva Peron though her mausoleum is one of the least impressive of the lot. We spent a couple of hours here with a guide that we hired at the entrance."

Dov Frazer

"Recoleta Cemetery is a must-visit in Buenos Aires, offering a fascinating mix of history, art, and architecture. The elaborate mausoleums and intricate sculptures make it feel like an open-air museum rather than just a cemetery. It’s the final resting place of many notable figures, including Eva Perón, which adds to its historical significance.

The entrance fee is around $17, which feels a bit steep for a cemetery, but if you appreciate history and architecture, it’s worth it. The layout is like a maze, so I’d recommend using a map or joining a guided tour to fully appreciate the stories behind the tombs.

Overall, it’s a unique and hauntingly beautiful place, but the high entrance fee and occasional crowds knock it down a star."
