Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Fort Berkeley for its historical significance and the scenic hikes leading to it. The opportunity for tide pooling is a unique draw, though some note the fort's cannons are not as prominent as expected. The surrounding natural beauty and views are consistently highlighted as major positives.

"i climbed down from the bridge part and there was some great tide pooling! i notice that most of the people visiting the island are old and rich, so maybe they shouldn't do that or they'll break a hip. in any case, found some chiton, rock burrowing urchins, barnacles, shells, and more! The fort is pretty cool too, i guess."

"Fort Berkeley still guarding the entrances into English Harbour today by keeping the strong waves at bay, protecting the ships inside.
However, to my surprise I was a bit confused when I saw the lonely Cannon that I was searching for, for more 25 years. Upon checking the comparisons with those than are buried as decorations in the dockyard, it bears absolutely no resemblance.

What I tell you this Cannon bears all the resemblance of those Cannons at Fort James, It was removed probably sometime in the 1980’s.
You can find missing spot at Fort James right between the three Cannons pointing to Fort Barrington. From my recollections of Fort James in the 70’s they were four guns in that spot. It was exactly where they planted a concrete pole that contained the security cameras and some communications apparatus.

The entrance of English Harbour was formerly defended in times of warfare by a massive iron chain, that attached from fort Berkley to fort Charlotte across the mouth of the harbour. In addition to that by the two forts on each of the harbour opening. Over at Fort Charlotte, it was decorated and mounted with four guns, 18 and 24 pounders and over here at Fort Berkley the decorations constitutes of 24 guns which of all since disappeared."
