What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
Visitors highlight the Pont dels Escalls' immense historical significance as the birthplace of Andorra's co-principality and the site of crucial treaties. While the bridge itself is noted as being in a somewhat abandoned state, its historical weight and the beauty of the surrounding hiking trails are frequently praised.
"The Pont dels Escalls is a medieval bridge from the 13th century, in the Andorran parish of Escaldes-Engordany.
It has a single semicircular arch built with rough stone and is located on the old road from Andorra la Vella to Engordany and Les Escaldes, crossing the Valira del Nord, shortly before its confluence with the Valira. The bridge is very high and is currently quite abandoned and often full of debris.
It has great historical importance for being the place where the signing of the Pariatges took place during 1278 and 1288 between the Bishop of Urgell and the Count of Foix. This document of reconciliation and arbitration gave rise to the institution of the co-principality and is considered the main historical document of Andorra until the constitution of 1993. Likewise, in 1881 the Treaty of Pont dels Escalls was signed in the Gothic tower next to it and which put an end to the revolt of 1880, the culmination of the discords between the Andorran parties."
