Reviews Summary

Visitors consistently praise the Grand Mosque as an architectural and archaeological masterpiece, deeply rooted in history and representing the authentic heritage of Ghardaia. The panoramic city views from the mosque are a major highlight. Some find the summer heat intense, and navigating the area without a guide can be challenging.

"Here lies the heart of Ghardaia, the mosque that has stood for centuries, preserving its authentic structure—a true representation of the beautiful heritage of this region. Constructed with simple tools in ancient times to withstand the test of time, this mosque still stands today. You can also enjoy the breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city. Truly, I highly recommend visiting it. If you come to Ghardaia and miss this gem, you've missed out on a lot"

Mohamed Boukermouche

"The ancient mosque of Taghrdayat Palace... the oldest building in this palace, dating back to about ten (10) centuries... meaning 1000 years of existence, God willing! Thanks to God Almighty, prayers are still held there to this day, and it has distinctive programs throughout the year, all of which are Quranic programmes, based on recitation of the Qur’an and the exchange of alms."

Bachir BOUSNANE

"It is considered the first building constructed with the founding of the Ghardaia Palace in 1048 AD. It is located at the highest point overlooking the entire palace.

In addition to two prayer halls, several structures were built around the mosque, particularly the "mahdara" located on the northern side. These were designated for teaching the Holy Quran and for managing and operating the palace's surveillance and defense system.

The mosque has two minarets. The first is the oldest and smallest, standing no more than six meters tall. Only the upper portion of this minaret remains today, as its base was reconstructed to create a passageway following the mosque's expansion. The second minaret, built in the 16th century during the reign of Sheikh Ammi Said, is pyramid-shaped and stands approximately 23 meters above ground level."
