Reviews Summary

Visitors praise Zgërdhesh for its historical significance as the ancient city of Albanopolis and its stunning panoramic views. The site offers an authentic, uncrowded experience for those willing to explore its expansive ruins. However, access can be challenging due to unreliable navigation and limited public transport, requiring careful planning.

"Nice ancient ruined illyrian castle of Albanopolis. I thought this was it but as you hike higher there are many more ruins to explore. The view of the village and with many lakes, the mountain ranges and far away you can sort of see the Tirana Airport, too.
Take either Fushe Kruja bus heading towards Kruja or Kruja heading towards Fushe Kruja and ask the bus driver to drop you off at Halil (they pronounced it Halee-leh). Have your Goggle Translate ready as most bus drivers do not speak English. If you got off from Kruja then make a left turn towards the side street towards the mosque. If you got off from Fushe Kruja then make a right turn onto Rruga Fshatit Halil Street (Please view the last video). Do not completely follow the Google Map as there are closed roads and it is never updated in Albania (nor can you update it on the map, not sure why). Try and look for signs and look for young kids who can sort of speak English (I followed the Goog Map and it got me to a closed road and it was a private area).

Albanopolis was a city in ancient Roman Macedon specifically in Epirus Nova, the city of the Albanoi, an Illyrian tribe. Albanopolis has been located by various scholars at the modern-day village of Zgërdhesh or at Krujë. The ancient city may correspond with later mentions of the settlement called Arbanon and Albanon during the Middle Ages, although it is not certain this was the same place. The city appears at 150 AD, almost 300 years after Roman conquest of the region."

"Great, accessible historic site -- I started at the base wall with the signs and walked up through the pasture (avoided the cows and the dogs) along the rocks to the church ruins. No clear path, bu easy to walk around the rocks. Great views from the top, interesting to think about the Illyrian culture being in this area 2500 years ago."

"Nice Illyrian spot to see. Nobody goes there so you can relax and spend some time here hiking up the hill to see more walls. There are two abandoned military bunkers on the other side of the stream down in the valley."

In-depth insights and expert knowledge

The History of Albanopolis

Zgërdhesh Archaeological Site is the location of ancient Albanopolis, a significant city of the Illyrian tribe known as the Albanoi. It flourished during the Roman period, specifically in Epirus Nova, and is mentioned in historical records from around 150 AD. The city's impressive walls suggest it was a strategically important settlement, defending the region for centuries. Reddit

While its exact origins are debated, the site's scale indicates a substantial population and a well-developed urban center. The presence of later structures, like the church ruins, also points to the site's continued use and importance through different historical eras. Understanding its past as a key Illyrian stronghold adds depth to the visitor experience. Reddit

Scholars have linked Albanopolis to later medieval mentions of settlements like Arbanon and Albanon, though definitive proof of continuity is not always clear. Exploring Zgërdhesh offers a tangible connection to this ancient Illyrian heritage, allowing visitors to walk through the remnants of a civilization that predates much of what is commonly known about the region's history. Reddit

Navigating the Terrain and Access

Reaching Zgërdhesh requires a bit of local savvy. The most practical approach involves taking a local bus towards Kruja or Fushe Kruja and alighting at the village of Halil. Travelers emphasize the importance of communicating your destination clearly to the bus driver, as English proficiency can be limited, and having a translation app ready is highly recommended. Reddit

Once you arrive in Halil, the journey to the ruins involves navigating local roads and paths. Google Maps can be notoriously unreliable in Albania, with outdated information and closed roads. Visitors advise looking for physical signs and, if possible, seeking assistance from locals, particularly younger residents who may have a better grasp of English. The site itself is spread across a hillside, so be prepared for uneven ground and inclines. Reddit

Sturdy, closed-toe footwear is essential for exploring Zgërdhesh. The terrain includes rocky paths and open pastures, where you might encounter livestock like cows. While there are no formal facilities on-site, the experience of discovering these ancient ruins amidst the natural landscape is a significant draw for visitors seeking an authentic and less commercialized historical adventure.
