What Travellers Say
Reviews Summary
The Byzantine Forum is a historically significant site in Durrës, offering a glimpse into its past as a major trading center. While it's easily accessible and free to view from the sidewalk, some visitors note a lack of maintenance and graffiti. It's a worthwhile quick stop for history enthusiasts, especially with nearby cafes for refreshments.
"One of the most historical places in the ancient city of Durrës (Durrahium, Δυρράχιο) A trading center where citizens from all over the world came to buy, including aristocrats, princes and kings, biblical saints and personalities of art, music, painting and iconography. The Byzantine market was the main place for receiving and giving news from east to west and from north to south.
One of the places where the Orthodox Christian faith was preached to open the eyes of the mind and soul of people living under the darkness of paganism.
Walking through the Byzantine market, it is impossible not to feel the grace of the golden times when the city of Durrës was the Capital of Knowledge and Spiritual and Commercial Wealth that connected the East with the West from Jerusalem to Constantinople to Durres and then to Rome and all of Europe.
The same feeling can be felt when visiting the Amfiteatër, the Castle Walls, the Torra of Durrës, Kavaja Rock and more.
The keeper of the ancient treasures of Durrës, Vangjel Toçi, did his utmost to preserve the ancient treasures of the city by personally sacrificing himself in their maintenance, often without pay. After his death, local governments corrupted by anti-Albanian enterprises and against the true history of the city have tried and worked to destroy and ruin it. Illegal constructions have been made without any care on major works of history, culture and glorious nature of the city, which has been written about all over the world.
Unfortunately, the migration of more than 80% of Durrës residents abroad and the influx of the population from northern Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia and foreigners who have no knowledge of the city's history and culture nor interest in financing the maintenance of cultural and historical objects, have transformed the city into an ugly block of buildings without any aesthetics, a structure that respects the history, culture and nature of the city, including the coast that was once wide and endless where the eye, soul and mind found peace in that fabulous richness where along it there were pine forests where ocean turtles came and took shelter in the summer to give birth to their young.
This is what Durrës was like 50-40-30 years ago.
Therefore, I call on every citizen who has the heart, the will and the desire to preserve the values of the city to stand up and strive for it. This will give more value to every citizen. Fight corruption together as the people of Durrës did in the past years.
Preserve and transmit the dialect, songs and dances as well as the names of Durrës: Taulanti, Teuta, Pirro, Agron, Asti, Vlashi, and many others as part of yours and a priceless heritage.
With longing and tears - Teuta ❤️"
